What it detects

This check measures the round trip between your browser and our edge — an approximate view of latency, throughput and jitter on your current path. Running through a VPN, it reflects the added hop to and from the VPN server.

The result is summarised as a coarse speed bucket (for example fast, medium or slow) rather than a precise benchmark.

Why it matters

A VPN almost always adds some latency and can reduce throughput; a large drop often points to a distant or congested server. Comparing with and without the VPN, or across servers, helps you pick a fast exit.

Connection quality also shapes streaming and video-call experience, which is why VPN users care about it.

How to read your result

Treat the bucket as a rough guide, not a lab benchmark — browser measurements vary with load and background traffic. If speed is poor, try a nearer or less busy VPN server.

We store only the coarse bucket, never a detailed performance profile of your line.
